Q: Will a 2001 f150 lariat 4x4 supercrew burnout both tires or just one like other trucks?
How do you know if it has a limited slip? It has the 5.4l triton with cold air intake and exhaust

A: depends on the rearend. probably has a limited slip in it. that allows traction to one side when the wheel loses traction hence spinning the other tire bites. centrifugal force turns the other tire and the rear BANGS back and forth giving the illusion that both tires are spinning. open and posi rears dont usually come stock. well not an illusion but there is only power goin to one side...the drive side

Q: Can you put a plow on a 2001 Ford F150 supercrew lariat?
I was told you could not fit one.

A: I wouldn't add one because they are heavy and wear front end parts out faster. A heavier truck would be better

Q: Where is the Gem Module located on a 2001 f150 5.4L efi supercrew lariat?
I have a back surgery pending and thus can't really crawl around under the dash. I need to replace the GEM module and possibly the fuse box according to my reading. How can I accomplish this?

A: GEM module is on the backside of the fuse panel itself. (Left lower side of the dash, near the park brake pedal). Part of the GEM module replacement process requires downloading the info from the GEM onto a scanner, and uploading it back onto the new unit. If you don't have access to a Ford STAR tester, this will prove to be a huge PITA. Between the standing on your head to access the module, the specialty scanner, and an apparent back issue, I would recommend farming this one out to the dealer.

Q: Can somebody provide me a tool list and tips for a DIY front end job on my F150 truck? See details inside?
Replacing the following: Both Upper Control Arms Idler Arm Pittman Arm L & R lower ball joints. Please list any special tools and any tips would be appreciated. Vehicle: 2001 F150 Lariat, V8 5.4 Vehicle is not a 4x4, its a 4x2

A: A front end alignment is the only part of this job that you can't really do yourself. And if you do the rest properly, that probably won't be that far off. Although I still do recommend you get one afterwards. The Ball joints are pressed in, so you will need a ball joint press. Use puller type tools to disconnect the tie rod ends, and other joints you are not replacing. Only use a pickle fork tool on parts that you are replacing, as they will rip the dust boots. Go to Autozone.com and register. You need to do that now, in order to access their Repair Guides. They have one for your truck, that will show you how to do all the stuff you mentioned. After you register, click the repair info" link, and select your truck. 2001, Ford, F-150 2wd, and which engine. (doesn't really matter for this, but you need to pick one) Once you have your vehicle profile entered, click the link "View Repair Guide" above the box where your vehicle is listed. Click the "Suspension" link, the "Front Suspension" link, the " Rear-wheel Drive Coil Spring Front Suspension" link, and "Steering Knuckle & Ball Joints" for the ball joint procedure, or " Upper Control Arms" for that. The Idler Arm and Pitman arm are so easy they don't even bother giving instructions it looks like. Use a pickle fork to separate each from the rest of the steering linkage, where the ball joint part of the larger part is, after removing the nut (and cotter pin if used). The idler arm bolts to the frame. You may have to reach through a hole with a socket on an extension to hold the bolts while loosening the nuts. Careful not to drop the socket in the frame. The Pitman arm requires a special puller to remove it from the splined attachment at the bottom of the steering gearbox. The pitman arm has a key in the spline you need to line up with the gearbox spline when you put the new one back on. Like one of the ridges is missing. Then just use the big nut to tighten it down on. (did I forget to mention the nut? Oh well, I'm sure you'll see it. LOL) Bolt the Idler arm back on the frame, then put the ball joint like part back in the steering linkage for the Idler and the Pitman, and tighten the nuts down. Install cotter pins if used. Now, as far as these tools, look back up at the top of the web page, and click the "In our stores" link, the " Loan-A-Tool Program" link, then the " Steering and Suspension" link for the ball joint press, and pickle forks, and the " Pullers - Specialized" link for the pullers for the parts you need to re-use. Also recommend a puller for the Pitman arm, though they do show a pickle fork for that. They don't work very good for Pitmans. They're all free to use with a deposit, which is returned when you're done. I hear that they also expect you to buy the parts there in exchange for this service. (I don't know first-hand, as I already have all these tools) But considering they probably have the best prices anyway, not a bad deal. Most other stores charge rental fees. If you have any other questions, or something doesn't look like I described, e-mail me from my profile page (click my avatar), and I'll try to clear things up. And good luck!

Q: Brake problems in 2001 F150?
Today I got into my 2001 Ford F150 Lariat 4x4 Supercrew. I haven't driven it since Thursday night. I started it up, let it warm up for about 5 minutes. I got in it, put it in drive and took off. Right away, I noticed that the brake pedal was really soft. When I was driving it felt like I had a flat tire. I pulled over and checked my tires, they're ok. I checked the brake fluid, it was a little low. I filled it up. The pedal went back to being normal. But when I go to stop the brakes grind like shi*. I drove home after about an hour and rechecked the brake fluid. It looks really dark compared to when I added the new brake fluid. It sounds like the majority of the grinding might be coming from the back, but it's really hard to tell. Like I said the brakes were perfect the other night, now they're about as bad as they can get without going out. Any opinions?

A: Your only option is to get them checked .

Q: What would cause this steering problem after front end work? See inside(2001 F150 p/u 5.4 v8 Lariat)?
I replaced the following: Upper Control Arms (grease fittings) Lower Ball Joints (grease fittings) Pitman Arm (NO grease fittings) Idler Arm (NO grease fittings) **had front end alignment done right after job. When I drove my truck away from the tire shop that did the alignment, I notice that things felt different with the steering. It felt tight, if i turned the steering wheel to the left, the steering wheel stayed left. Ditto to the right. The steering wheel did not pop back to center. Also, a slight pull to the left is almost a constant. The alignment report showed everything within normal range. So my question is, could it be that the pitman arm is too tight and I also did not grease the pitman arm as it did not have a grease fitting? Or could it be the idler too tight and needing grease? Or other?

A: It's called rubber necking!! lol

Q: What is the best way to play an IPOD on an older car and an older home stereo and NOT the cig lighter adptr?
I need details and products to be able to play my ipod clearly on the following: 2000 BMW 528I (has am/fm with cassette player) 2001 F150 Lariat (has am/fm and CD only) 1998 model Yamaha receiver on my home stereo Thanks First 3, thanks for the answers but I am looking for the highest quality sound, not the fm radio unclean static option.

A: You can get an adapter that plays through an FM frequency. You just plug it into your ipod, the tune whatever radio you wish to use to that frequency (usually one on the lower end that does not currently get a signal for example, 88.9 or 89.1--but you may have to play around until you find one that works). You will be able to hear your music and use your ipod. The sound quality will not be as good as other methods, but you will be able to hear it. If you are driving, as the frequency signals change, you may have to adjust your adapter. Here is an example of FM Transmitters: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/iPod-MP3-Accessories/MP3-FM-Transmitters/abcat0208031.c?id=abcat0208031

Q: F150 won't start.... not sure why.?
I have a 2001 4x4 F150 5.4L SuperCrew Lariat. When I turn the key, it will not start, just clicks and gauges do a sweep. Voltmeter shows battery at 12.22 volts. Terminals were cleaned, brushed and reconnected 2 days ago. One auto parts place says battery is bad, another says battery is good.... both tests were done the same day. Vehicle started when jumped. If the battery shows 12 volts, how can you come to the conclusion that the battery needs to be replaced?

A: Well that's kind of common sense there , if you had to jump the vehicle to start and it won't start on its own. i would say replace the battery. good luck P.S. double check the terminals to make sure they are tight.

Q: Do you know where i can buy either used or new...?
2001 factory rims for a F150 4X4 supercrew lariat.. its a 17'X7.5... i have looked all over google, and that is not helping.. also looked at backpage and craigslist aswell.. please help

A: If you're in San Francisco, this is the place: Adam Hassett's Rolling Stock 695 S Van Ness Ave San Francisco, CA 94110 (415) 558-9121 I'm sure there are similar shops in your area that specialize in new and used rims and tires (and hubcaps!) and thus have a nice selection or even know where to get more.
